What began with 15 acres and a few azaleas and perennials in 1979 has grown to include over 60 acres and more than 3,000 azaleas plus a large variety of unusual plants and native Indiana trees. Two spring-fed lakes, a waterfall, a koi pond and several unique sculptures complement the beautifully landscaped trails, which wind throughout the grounds.

Beverly Knight, along with her husband, Steve, became inspired by the gardens she encountered as a driver for UPS and eventually began collecting starts of plants and trees from customers on her routes. Thus began what is now one of the largest collections of azaleas in the Midwest. In 2011, the Azalea Path was honored to host the national convention of the Azalea Society of America.

Save time and money this season enjoying family fun in Coshocton, Ohio, with everything from hot air balloons to traditional Appalachian music, to 1800′s history, to wineries and outdoor fun.

Coshocton is home to the Monticello III Horse-drawn Canal Boat ride (www.visitcoshocton.com/horse-drawn-canal-boat) and the restored 1800′s canal era town of Historic Roscoe Village (www.RoscoeVillage.com). Roscoe Village features charming shops, restaurants and tours of the historic buildings that showcase life in the 1800′s, where visitors can interact with traditional artisans, meet an 1800′s doctor and participate in an old-fashioned one-room school lesson.

Shopping and dining in Roscoe Village is a delight. With stores containing jewelry, handcrafted leather goods, ladies apparel, gourmet foods, Vera Bradley, homemade fudge, antiques, flowers & plants, gifts, pottery, wine, kitchen wares, home décor, garden accents and more, it is easy to spend a leisurely day here. Dining is also a pleasure for the senses, with choices ranging from a wine and coffee bar, to family dining, to homemade custard ice cream, to pub fare, to patio dining and evening entertainment. You can even spend the night in the village in luxury accommodations.

The kids (young and old) will love meeting the huge Percheron draft horse teams that pull the Monticello III Canal Boat along an original section of the Ohio and Erie Canal. On the 45-minute canal boat ride the captain explains 1800′s canal life and tall tales told in first person creating the feeling of actually gliding right into the 1830′s.

While in Coshocton, enjoy the area’s five amazing wineries – Raven’s Glenn, Rainbow Hills, Yellow Butterfly, Heritage Vineyards and Shawnee Springs – which make up the Three Rivers Wine Trail (www.ThreeRiversWineTrailOhio.com). Along the trail, stop at Pearl Valley Cheese where they’ve been making award-winning natural cheese since 1928.

You’ll also find Unusual Junction, (www.TheUnusualJunction.com) a unique shopping and dining complex housed in a restored 1895 railroad depot. The station contains the Lava Rock Grill restaurant and a gourmet foods market, and the original “Price Is Right” sign hangs in the restaurant.

Summer events in Coshocton (www.VisitCoshocton.com/events) include the Coshocton Hot Air Balloon Festival on June 7-9, the Coshocton Dulcimer Days Festival on June 14-16 and the Indian Mud Run on June 22.

This summer Coshocton will also host “Ohio Chautauqua ~ When Ohio Was the Western Frontier” on July 23-27. This Ohio Humanities program offers free daytime workshops for youth and adults, then free evening first-person programs featuring frontier characters such as York, Johnny Appleseed, Margret Blennerhassett, Chief Logan and Oliver Hazard Perry.

In the fall, enjoy the Wings Over Coshocton Air Show on September 21, then the Coshocton County Fair September 27 – October 3. The Apple Butter Stirrin’ Festival in Historic Roscoe Village and the Fall Foliage and Farm Tour, during the weekend of October 18-20, are two popular events each year. Then the season completes with the traditional Christmas Candlelighting Ceremonies in December in Historic Roscoe Village.

Coshocton offers several fun packages that make planning your next trip easy for your getaways, romantic escapes or family fun vacations. For more information, call for a free visitor packet at 800-338-4724 or go to www.VisitCoshocton.com and then visit Coshocton in person.
