During the late 1700s and early 1800s, Ocracoke prospered as a main hub for transporting cargo to the mainland. Ocracoke became a link in the supply lines for the colonies during the Revolution. Ocracoke also housed a naval base during World War II. The vast waters off of Ocracoke became known as Torpedo Junction as U-boats threatened the coastal defenses of the United States. U-boat torpedo casualties are buried in the British Cemetery in Ocracoke Village.
