For generations families have traveled to Loudonville, Ohio for warm weather vacation fun. But when the leaves fall from the trees and a gentle layer of snow covers the hills, the area become a very special winter getaway with lots of “cool” weather things to do too.

Mohican State Park is serene and scenic in the off-season. In autumn the 6,000 acres of rugged woodlands are ablaze with all the colors of the rainbow. Clear Fork Gorge, deepest gorge in Ohio, is particularly scenic. The colors of fall and snowfall of winter can be enjoyed on the Park’s 45 miles of hiking trails, 24.5 miles of challenging mountain bike trails, even 9 miles of enjoyable bridle trails. In addition, visitors can cross country ski and snowmobile in Mohican. Downhill skiing is also available close-by in Mansfield.

Nearby Malabar Farm State Park is also a great place to visit in the off-season. The working farm has tours of their 32-room Big House, built by fames author Louis Bromfield. They also have 12 miles of trails for hikers and horseback riding. Rent cross country skis at the Farm’s Visitor Center. As weather permits, ice fish on the house pond and on nearby Pleasant Hill Lake.

The Mohican State Park Forest also allows hunting, in season. A valid Ohio hunting license is required and can be purchased at a local store. D & D Lodge offers hunting packages.

Just off the Northern coast of Ohio on Lake Erie, you’ll find Kelleys Island, which is the largest fresh water American island in Lake Erie. Yet at 4 square miles, it has the feel of a small community, surrounded by forests and beaches. This popular Ohio vacation spot has something for everyone, from outdoor enthusiast, to history buff, to the late-night party-goer. During the day, you can take a stroll along sandy beaches and on the winding boardwalk through woods filled with wild grapes and butterflies. The Island is full of history, with sites like the Glacial Grooves State Memorial, where you can see where glaciers cut through the rock, carving channels and grooves over 30,000 years ago. Aside from natural wonders, there are also other historic sites and buildings you can see and tour, like Kelleys Mansion, a 3-story mansion built in 1860′s. Walk through town and see historic and quaint shops.

If you enjoy fishing, Kelleys Island is great place to catch perch, catfish, smallmouth and white bass, as well as the fish they are most well-known for – walleye. Bring your boat, or take a trip on a fishing charter.

Other attractions at Kelleys Island include Kelleys Island Brewery. Taste beer made right here on the island while enjoying live music outside, overlooking Lake Erie. The island also features a winery, Kelleys Island Wine Co., which is known for its relaxed atmosphere and award-winning wines.

The Cain Park Arts Festival: The festival, July-9-11 will be at Cain Park, 14591 Superior Road, Cleveland Heights. The Painesville Party in the Park: The party is taking place on July 16-18 in Veteran’s Park, 7 Richmond Street. There will be three stages that will have reggae, jazz, folk, soul and funk bands playing continuously throughout the day and night. The beer garden offers domestic and micro brews and there’s plenty of shopping, demonstrations and activities for the kids. This is a free event that starts at noon on Friday and ends at 11:00pm on Sunday.

The Cuyahoga County Fair: The fair runs August 9-15 at the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds, 164 Eastland Road, Berea. Attendees can expect 20 midway rides, 100 food stands, animals, exhibits, bull riding, country music, arts and crafts, a beer garden, shops, a demolition derby and fireworks. Don’t miss out on the variety of activities this event has to offer for the whole family on your Ohio summer vacation.

The Feast of the Assumption: This special event will be taking place in Little Italy August 12-15. There will be entertainment, rides and games and don’t forget to come hungry because you won’t want to miss the delicious food provided by the area’s best restaurants.
